Shawnee National Forest Cabins – East
When renting a cabin in the Shawnee National Forest there are a couple critical things to be aware of. The more important one is the Shawnee Forest is big and spread-out. Renting any Shawnee National Forest cabin could mean driving over an hour to the more popular hikes if not careful!
Shawnee Forest Cabins on the eastern side of Southern Illinois are closer to many of the more popular hikes and other natural outdoor attractions of the forest. Hikes such as Garden of the Gods, Pounds Hollow, Rim Rock, Cave in Rock, Millstone Bluff, Indian Kitchen, Sand Cave, Lusk Creek, Jackson Falls and Burden Falls are all located on the eastern side of the Shawnee forest.
Finding a cabin near Garden of the God, Herod Illinois, Northern Golconda Illinois (northern Pope County) or Eddyville will be a perfect central location to setup basecamp for your adventure. Most hikes will only be a few minutes’ drive away. Keep in mind Pope County Illinois and Hardin Country Illinois are the least populated counties within the state of Illinois because they have a majority of Shawnee National Forest Lands.
